About

Hey, you there. No idea how you found this place, but maybe it'll help you find a book.

This site is powered by the Goodreads API, so as common courtesy I link all of the books on this site back to them. Only feels appropriate. Also have the books linked to Amazon if I have the url for it. Given Amazon owns Goodreads now I guess they're really all going to the same place...

Anyways, I'm not an expert on anything, especially books, but I wanted a better way to search for a few things:

  • The best books out there
  • The best books out there, that are in [insert genre here]
  • The best books out there, that have been published in [insert period here]
  • The best recent releases to read

Unfortunately, that's a little harder to do than I would have thought... So I grabbed some data and proceeded to go to town, so to speak. The main things that I'm doing here are:

  • Removing Sequels and Prequels from the system: The ratings are very biased (you had to like the first book to make it to the second/third), and no (sane) person starts reading a new book halfway through the series...
  • Adjusted Ratings: I made two versions of this, but the general principle is that there's an exponential relationship between the star rating (0-5) and how good the book it is. At the same time, the number of ratings has a log relationship to how much you should want to read the book. Adjusted Rating (Popular) gives more weight to massively popular books, while Adjusted Rating cares more about the average rating (once you reach a certain review count threshold)... I wrote a full blog post on the subject of ratings as well if you want to check it out.
  • Removing a Few Genres from the Aggregates: The 'Frontpage' version of the rating system has a few genres removed since most readers on this site probaby aren't browsing for those books. Notably are children's books, foreign-language books, religion books, and adult-themed romances. You can still find all those books on the site though, you just have to use the search feature. Might need to give me a while to get the foreign language ones sorted out...
  • Other Considerations: I've considered doing a few other adjustments to what gets included / excluded from the front-page aggregates but at some point it becomes too much. So for now we're just leaving it...

With all that said, happy browsing! If you'd like to follow my progress in making / editing the site, you can follow the project on Twitter or IndieHackers. I'll also be periodically posting updates to the blog... but it might be a bit of an irregular posting schedule... If you have any comments, feel free to post something on Twitter or Reddit, I'm sure it'll make its way back to me eventually...

And yes, this is my COVID project. Some people learned to play guitar or can now speak fluent French. Me, I created a relatively useless book-finding application. 2020 in a nutshell, folks.
