Welcome to the Blog

August 10, 2020

Welcome to the Next Novel Project Blog, where I make observations to the world and no one reads them!

Just kidding, you read them!

Anyways, I've now been messing around on this site for about a week and it provides me some much-needed meditation time away from my job. In a sense, this entire site is a blog, just most of it is code-focused.

Chapter 1: Origins

This project started about three years ago at this point in an apartment in Brooklyn; at that point I was using R to scrape some data from the internet so I could find a good Fantasy book to read. Fortunately, I figured out that I could just use the Goodreads API instead, otherwise I may have gone completely crazy. The end result of all my work was a hodgepodge of code and a few pretty good books on my to-be-read list...

Some time later I posted a terrible version of the result on a Heroku app and shared it with a few of my friends.

It wasn't particularly useful...

Chapter 2: Revisiting

I revisited the project last year, but with a different coding language; I had started using python for a few things in my job and thought it would be a good learning exercise to try this again. I got probably 80% of the way through building the API wrapper and eventually decided I was annoyed with the inconsistency of the API... and so ended Chapter 2.

Chapter 3: Redemption

Some odd combination of significant amounts of coding at work and being trapped in a small space for an extended period of time probably drove me insane. And in that insanity, I apparently decided that I should finish building this project...

Oddly enough, I actually finished the project this time. And the feedback I've gotten on it was... shockingly good? While there's definitely still a few obvious issues, it seems to be useful to at least a few people, which is really all that you can ask for on dumb side projects...

Since finishing it up, I've put more work into improving it to get to a useful form for people to be able to take advantage of. I added an advanced search feature, which is something I'd actually been hoping to get to for quite some time...

Epilogue

Well the story isn't done, so you'll just have to wait for the epilogue...
